What fears have you overcome and how?

For as long as I can remember, fear had been a quiet passenger—never loud, but always present.

When I was a child, it was the fear of not being “enough.” Not smart enough to answer the teacher’s question. Not brave enough to try out for the team. It’s not interesting enough to make lasting friends. That quiet voice followed me into adulthood, where it took on new names: imposter syndrome, anxiety, and self-doubt.

By the time I entered the professional world, that fear had become more sophisticated. I was terrified of failure—of taking risks that might expose me. So, I played it safe. I stayed in roles that didn’t challenge me, nodded in meetings where I had better ideas, and turned down opportunities because “what if I couldn’t deliver?”

But then, something shifted. A mentor once said to me, “You don’t build courage by waiting for the fear to go away—you build it by showing up anyway.”

So, I decided to show up.

I started small. I volunteered to lead a project outside my comfort zone. I signed up for public speaking, even though the idea made my palms sweat. I started raising my hand—not because I knew I was right, but because I knew I could contribute.

There were setbacks, of course. There were moments when I failed. But something remarkable happened—I didn’t break. I grew.

Over time, I realized that fear wasn’t the enemy. Fear was just a signal—a compass pointing toward something meaningful. The more I faced it, the more it shrank. What was once paralyzing became energizing.

Today, I don’t claim to be fearless. But I’ve overcome the belief that fear has to hold me back. I’ve learned that growth and fear often walk hand in hand—and I choose to walk with them both.

That’s how I’ve overcome my fears: not by eliminating them, but by learning to live—and lead—through them.
